Rother Woods Recorders

The Rother Woods area (between the Rother and the Brede) has been identified as one of the most important areas for woodlands in the South East. In this area we’ll be conserving and promoting butterflies by:

  • Improving habitat for woodland butterflies by working with woodland owners.
  • Looking for woodland butterflies and moths (with landowners’ permissions)
  • Holding special events to promote butterflies and moths.
  • Promoting woodland work and woodland markets to ensure a sustainable future.

Achievements in 2008 and plans for 2009:

27 butterfly species recorded (half of all UK species), including 3 UK BAP (Biodiversity Action Plan) priority species.
Targeted surveys in 2009 will help to map the range of the 3 UK BAP priority species. We will also search for important butterfly species not recorded in 2008.
Over 5,000 butterfly sightings recorded. This information will be passed to our County Recorders and also the Biodiversity Records Centre at Woods Mill.
A 'Big Butterfly Hunt' public event is planned for 2009.
416 moth species recorded including 3 Red Data Book moths, 2 UK BAP species and 7 Nationally Scarce species.
40 sites prioritised for moth surveys in 2009. Garden-edge moth surveys will also begin with moth traps being made available to local people.
Over 80 Rother landowners and managers have been identified and contacted.
By the end of 2009 over 100 local woodland owners will have been contacted and invited to get involved.
40 site advice visits have taken place.
A furher 20+ new sites will be visited in 2009 and management advice will be offered.
Help given to woodland owners in applying for woodland improvement grants totalling over £40,000.
Even more money is available for Woodland Improvement Grants from the Forestry Commission in 2009.
Over £12,000 raised to improve the ride network at Beckley Woods for butterflies and other wildlife.
More funding for special habitat improvement projects will be sought in 2009.
16 different events held in 2008, attended by over 380 people.
A wide range of events are being planned for 2009 plus increased work with local schools.
Over 600 hours of volunteer time has been contributed and volunteer Work Parties have begun.
More volunteers will be encouraged to get involved in 2009. A series of workshops in 2009 will provide training.
