A259 Buckle By-Pass, Seaford - Wall Cotoneaster Clearance

Suitable for:

Leader: Dave Harris - Email: d.harris8@btinternet.com

Location: A259 Buckle By-Pass, Seaford

Grid Reference: TQ47030014

Meeting place: Meet at the bus stop at the bottom of Hill Rise opposite Hawth Hill, Bishopstone

Following on from a successful weekend last year, the dates for a `second tranche` of Wall Cotoneaster clearance from this site has now been set for Saturday the 9th and Sunday the 10th of September.

By way of background, the steep slopes of the cutting through which the road runs support a colony of Small Blue, whose numbers have declined in recent years as the kidney vetch on this site has been swamped out by the growth of cotoneaster. The objective of this work is to remove the cotoneaster and allow the kidney vetch to flourish once again. Work was slow last year due to the steepness of the site and the need to bag and remove all that was cut to comply with the terms of the licence granted to BC by East Sussex County Highways. This year, following consultation with other interested parties (there are other insect and plant interests here), a decision has been made to work on the flat and wider Eastern end, which should considerably speed matters and also be a lot safer.

The work parties will run from 10.00 am till about 2.00 pm. All are welcome to join us for as long or as short a part of that time as you wish.

Yellow reflective tabards, gloves, loppers and secateurs will be available, but feel free to bring your own if you have them. Sturdy gripping footwear, long - sleeved shirt / jumper and jeans would be sensible. Cold drinks, biscuits and cake will also be on hand as a `bribe` - can`t guarantee the weather or Long - Tailed Blue, though!

Meeting place: The nearest town is Uckfield, and the grid reference for the entrance to the Rowland Wood is TQ516 147. The gate will be open so you can drive into the site and park down the track where there is plenty of space..

Some of us will be meeting (my own ETA 10 am, others earlier) on Friday (21 July) to cut and stack Bracken on PCH. Bob/Michael will be mowing paths to a double width, while Ill be on the brushcutter. If anyone is able to get along, to help bundle up and stack Bracken, your assistance would be gratefully received.
