Painted Lady butterfly resting on gravel drive. Took off suddenly as I approached circled round, landed again then took off again. No camera, but positive ID. (Mark Weston, 71 Wembley Avenue, Lancing, West Sussex)
It was 10°C and bright sunshine in breezy North Lancing. Between 12.00 and 13.00 2 Red Admiral, Painted Lady, Peacock, Speckled Wood. Certainly wasn't expecting the latter two! Hoping to see many of you tomorrow at the Members' Day. (Lindsay Morris, North Lancing)
Painted Lady
Painted Lady Vanessa cardui feeding on a dandelion flower on a footpath, in the sunshine. (Francine Sims, Bosham, West Sussex) - SU8086503922
There are a few Painted Ladies about, right now. The Common Dandelion may not be everyone's favourite but it does provide nectar, more-or-less all year round. Martin K
Painted Lady catching the sunshine in the amenity grass in my walk back from Castle Hill NNR (Tim Squire, Woodingdean) - TQ3603906389
It reached 6°C for a walk round gloriously sunny and windless North Lancing. 2 Red Admiral, Painted Lady, diverse flies, drone flies, bumblebees, ladybirds and wasps all happily on the wing. (Lindsay Morris, North Lancing)
In 2022, 2023 and now 2024, the latest date for Painted Lady has been November 28th. This compares with an average latest sighting for the 2010-14 survey of November 8th. It should be mild over the next 3-4 days. Will we see a Painted Lady in December? Martin K
JUST TO LET EVERYONE KNOW, THE SUSSEX BC ANNUAL MAGAZINE IS ON ITS WAY! I LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING A LEISURELY READ. Martin K (Martin Kalaher, Storrington wildlife garden)
Single Painted Lady seen next to the crossroads just East of the church this morning at 10:15. (Roy Meller, Stone Cross.) - TQ616044
The butterfly season is not over yet! Martin K
A Marmalade Fly (a very common hoverfly, but not at this time of the year!)
No butterflies today but there was a hoverfly in the garden (my latest-ever record for a hoverfly), Episyrphus balteatus (commonly known as the Marmalade Fly). It's one of the few hoverflies that over-winters as an adult, and may appear on a warm (ish) day in late Autumn or Winter. (Martin Kalaher, Storrington wildlife garden) - TQ082140
Red Admiral
A single Red Admiral took a short rest whilst heading in the direction of the sun near Nuthurst today. Later a Peacock patrolled a hedgerow near Horsham. (Patrick Moore , Nuthurst ) - TQ1951
Light Brown Apple Moth
Val and I went for a local walk when the day was sunny (and warm in sheltered spots) but no butterflies. However when I mowed the lawn I did disturb a couple of Light Brown Apple Moths. (John Heys, West Worthing) - TQ131025
A Red Admiral and an immaculate Painted Lady seen flying low over bracken at 12:30 today. (Chris Skinner, Rackham viewpoint, Amberley Wildbrooks )
Another Painted Lady! See previous note. Martin K
My first Wall Brown larva of the winter season seen today at High and Over. Approx 1 cm. long, so a long way to go before next March/April. (Bob Eade, High and Over)
Red Admiral
Brown Hairstreak egg on Blackthorn
Just back from a morning walk, I had a quick look around the garden and spotted a Red Admiral flying down from the shrubbery into a patch of Nettles. Raced off for my camera but it wasn't there when I got back. Then it flew from the ground a few metres away and left the garden, heading south. Five minutes later there was another one by the house, and this was more obliging. It too flew away, heading south. They are still on the move. Otherwise a very poor photo of a Brown Hairstreak egg, on garden Blackthorn. I do not possess a macro lens to do this justice. The Blackthorn leaves are mostly down and so it is a good time to go hunting eggs. (Martin Kalaher, Storrington wildlife garden) - TQ082140
Two post apocalyptic Red Admirals seen at home today. The first of which was found basking on my sunny south facing Wall at around 1pm. After a quick flutter around the garden it returned to the wall for a further warm up. The second Red Admiral was seen flying around my lounge window a little later on. This one did not stop. (Trevor Rapley, Hailsham)
It was 11°C and very sunny between 12.30 and 14.00 across four sites in suburban North Lancing. 6 Red Admiral, 2 Painted Lady.. The latter knocked my eye out even though they were faded! I wasn't expecting that. They both disappeared downwind in an easterly direction. The Red Admirals seem to be going nowhere... (Lindsay Morris, North Lancing)
Last week I spent quite some time collecting data on "last sightings" over the past few years. A little bit tedious but the findings I think will be interesting. I'll publish when I have something more to say. Having done the "hard yards" I now have an Excel spreadsheet which gives me the info I am looking for, and in just 2-3 minutes. Painted Lady has been recorded surprisingly late in recent times (like Lindsay, I was surprised when I saw the dates): 16/11/2021, 28/11/2022, 28/11/2023 and now 25/11/2024. Martin K
GENTLE REMINDER: MEMBERS' DAY IS JUST ONE WEEK AWAY ON SATURDAY 30TH. PLEASE LOOK AT THE NEWS SECTION FOR FURTHER DETAILS. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A CASH-ONLY EVENT (RAFFLE TICKETS, BOOK STALL ETC) (Martin Kalaher, Burgess Hill)
A third frost in a row could not deter 5 Red Admiral from enjoying the balmy sunshine (7°C) at sheltered spots in suburban North Lancing. (Lindsay Morris, North Lancing)
CANCELLATION OF WORK PARTY SUNDAY 24 NOVEMBER: The conservation work party at Rowland Wood this Sunday 24 November has been cancelled. The forecast 50 mph winds will make it too dangerous to work within woodland and too dangerous for a bonfire. A further date will be added to the end of this season's programme of events. (Neil Hulme, Rowland Wood)
Despite an overnight frost, it was sunny enough in suburban North Lancing to bring out 6 Red Admiral and a Speckled Wood. It only reached about 5°C, but nobody cared! Even 2 Common Lizard were basking. Butterflies were seen between 11.30 (4°C) and 14.15. (Lindsay Morris, North Lancing )
I presume that within their micro-climate bubble it was bit higher than 5 degrees C. It's getting warmer again next week. Martin K
